Insurance rates are not the same for every customer--a variety of factors are evaluated to determine fair and accurate rates. Below are a number of the terms that will be used when underwriting and rating your policy. These definitions provide a brief description of the coverage that many companies offer and some of the terms and phrases used in connection with insurance:
Auto Insurance Coverage
Bodily Injury Protection - Protects you against financial loss if someone is killed or injured by your auto and you are found liable. Your legal expenses and court costs would also be included for a covered suit, as would your bail bond expenses.
Collision - Pays for the damages to your covered auto (up to the auto's actual cash value) caused by an impact with another vehicle or stationary or moving object. The amount of your deductible will be subtracted from a loss settlement.
Comprehensive ("Other than collision" coverage) - Pays for losses to your covered auto (up to its actual cash value), which are not caused by collision (the exception would be animal collision, which is covered under comprehensive.) Comprehensive includes damage caused by fire, theft, glass breakage, vandalism and hail damage. The amount of your deductible will be subtracted from a loss settlement.
Medical Payments (not required in all states) - Pays up to your policy limit should any reasonable medical expenses be incurred resulting from a covered loss. Medical Payments Coverage applies to everyone in your auto. It also applies to you, and relatives living in your household who are insured in other automobiles or who are struck by a vehicle. In many states you may choose your own Medical Payments Coverage limit.
Personal Injury Protection (No-fault: Reparation Benefits) - Pays benefits for the cost of personal injuries resulting from an automobile accident. This coverage applies without regard to who was at fault in the accident. Personal Injury Protection applies only to injuries to people. It does not cover damage to a car, or to any other property.
Property Damage Liability - Covers you against financial loss should you be found liable for damage to other’s property caused by your auto.
Rental Car Reimbursement Coverage - If your car becomes disabled as a result of a covered loss, this coverage pays the cost of a rental car, up to your policy limits. Specific features, credits, coverage and discounts may vary and may not be available in all states in accordance with state filings and applicable law. Applicants are individually underwritten and some may not qualify.
Towing and Labor Coverage - If your car becomes disabled, this coverage pays for towing and labor to assist at the scene, up to your policy limit.
Uninsured Motorist Coverage - Protects you and passengers in your vehicle. Pays damages for bodily injury or death caused by a driver who is legally responsible for the accident, but does not have insurance to pay for those damages.
Underinsured Motorist Coverage - Protects you and passengers in your vehicle. Pays damages for bodily injury or death caused by a driver who is legally responsible for the accident, but does not have enough insurance to pay for those damages.
